Pray With Us

Leader:    God of Jew & Gentile, walking the streets of Jerusalem,

All:        Your life is at risk.

Leader:     God of Jew & Gentile, sharing your food & your stories,

All:        Your life is at risk.

Leader:     God of Jew & Gentile, waiting for someone to betray you,

All:        Your life is at risk.

Please sing the hymn together.

O Cross of Christ, immortal tree, on which our Saviour died,

The world is sheltered by your arms that bore the crucified.

From bitter death & barren wood the tree of life is made;

Its branches bear unfailing fruit and leaves that never fade.

O faithful Cross, you stand unmoved while ages run their course:

Foundation of the universe, creation’s binding force.

Give glory to the risen Christ & to his cross give praise,

The sign of God’s unfathomed love, the hope of all our days.

Please sing the two antiphons & psalms as indicated.

Cantors: The wicked said:  ‘Let us oppress now the just

              Since their ways are contrary to ours.’

Side 1:      My soul waits, silent for God, for God alone, my salvation,

                Alone my rock, my safety, my refuge: I stand secure.

Side 2:    How long will some of you attack, tearing others down

            As if walls or fences they were on the verge of collapse?

Side 1:      You scheme to topple them, so smug in your lies;

                Your lips are all blessing, but murder fills your heart.

Side 2:    Wait, my soul, silent for God, for God alone, my hope,

            Alone, my rock, my safety, my refuge, I stand secure.

Side 1:       People, give your hearts to God, trust always!  God is our haven.

Side 2:    Mortals are but a breath, nothing more than a mirage;

            Set them on the scales, they prove lighter than mist.

Side 1:      Idolators are the fools, they brag of empty Gods.

                 You gods, be subject to the Lord!

Side 2:    Zion hears & is happy,

           The cities of Judah are joyful about your judgements, Lord.

Side 1:     You, Lord, you reach high in majesty above the earth,

               Far higher than any God.

Side 2:  Those who love the Lord hate evil;

           God shields their faithful lives & breaks the hold of the wicked.

Side 1:    Light will rain on the just, joy on the loyal heart.

              Be joyous in the Lord God, you people of faith, praise God’s holy name.

All:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

      And to the Holy Spirit;

      As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

      World without end, Amen.

All:        The wicked said: ‘Let us oppress now the just

            Since their ways are contrary to ours.

Cantors:  He bore the sins of many

              And interceded for sinners.

Side 1:      O God be gracious & bless us

                And let your face shed its light upon us.

Side 2:    So will your ways be known upon earth,

            And all nations know your saving help.

Side 1:      Let the peoples praise you, O God;

                Let all the peoples praise you.

Side 2:    Let the nations be glad & exult

            For you rule the world with justice.

Side 1:      With fairness you rule the peoples,

You guide the nations on earth.

Side 2:    Let the peoples praise you, O God;

            Let all the peoples praise you.

Side 1;      The earth has yielded its fruit

                For God our God has blessed us.

Side 2:    May God still give us his blessing

            Till the ends of the earth revere him.

Side 1:      Let the peoples praise you, O God;

Side 2:      Let all the peoples praise you.

All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

      And to the Holy Spirit,

      As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

      World without end, Amen.

All:          He bore the sins of many

              And interceded for sinners.

Reading (Isaiah 50.) followed by time for personal reflection.

The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens — wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.  Our God has opened my ear and I was not rebellious. I did not turn backward.  I gave my back to those who struck me,

and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.  Our God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is our God who helps me;

Please stand to sing the antiphon & Magnificat as indicated.

Cantors:  The Master says: ‘My time is near;

                It is at your house that I am keeping the Passover with my disciples.’

Side 1:      My being proclaims your greatness,

And my spirit finds joy in you, God my Saviour;

Side 2:    For you have looked upon me, your servant, in my lowliness:

All ages to come shall call me blessed.

Side 1:      God, you who are mighty, have done great things for me:

Holy is your name.

Side 2:    Your mercy is from age to age

Towards those who fear you.

Side 1:      You have shown might with your arm,

And confused the proud in their inmost thoughts.

Side 2:    You have deposed the mighty from their thrones,

And raised the lowly to high places.

Side 1:      The hungry you have given every good thing,

While the rich you have sent away empty.

Side 2:    You have upheld Israel, your servant,

Ever mindful of your mercy-

Side 1:      Even as you promised our ancestors,

Promised Abraham, Sarah, and their descendants for ever.

All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

       And to the Holy Spirit;

       As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

       World without end, Amen.

All:        The Master says: ‘My time is near;

            It is at your house that I am keeping the

             Passover with my disciples.’

Intercessions:

Reader:     Let us pray to the Saviour of all.   By dying he destroyed our death and by rising he restored our life.  May we be life-giving for others. ……… silence ………. Merciful God,

All:        We pray to you.

Reader:     Grant us the protection of your mother, the comforter of those who are afflicted – may we bring to others the consolation you have given us. ……… silence ………. Merciful God,

All:        We pray to you.

Reader:     You humbled yourself even to accepting death, death on a cross – grant to those who are dying at this time acceptance which brings peace. ……… silence ………. Merciful God,

All:        We pray to you.

Reader:     We pray for people who have died today and for those who will die tonight.  We also remember those whose anniversaries of death occur over the next few days, remembering especially:

Pause for people to add silently or aloud any intentions.

Leader begins the Our Father….

Leader: With your love to enfold us & your peace to uphold us,

All:     We go on our way.

Leader: With your word to guide us &

your heavenly host to guard us,

All:    We go on our way.

Leader: With the fellowship of the Holy Spirit between us, &

            your blessing on us & on our homes

All:    We go on our way.

We conclude our time of prayer together by listening to an Agnus Dei.
