             Ash Wednesday.

All:     And we gather to celebrate all that has been good.

Leader:  We have told the story of Jesus’s suffering & death,

& remembered how the disciples were scattered in despair.

All:    We celebrate Christ risen from the dead.

Leader: We have been silent, unable to respond to the failure,

             The disappointment of Good Friday.

All:     But now we have found our voices, we know our

hope. We have good news, alleluia!

Please join in the hymn.

Cantors:       The Lord has delivered his people,

Alleluia!

Side 1:    With my whole heart I praise the Lord among the just.

Great are God’s works, a delight to explore.

Side 2:  In splendour, in majesty, God’s justice will stand.

          Who can forget God’s wonders?

Side 1:    A God, merciful & kind, who nourished the faithful,

Upheld the covenant, revealed mighty deeds, giving them the land of pagans.

Side 2: Faithful, just & true are all God’s decrees:

Each law in its place, valid for ever.

Side 1:  The Lord redeems the faithful, decrees a lasting covenant.

Holy & awesome is God’s name.

Side 2: Fear of the Lord is wisdom’s crown, wise are those who live by it.

         Praise the Lord for ever!

All:          Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

              And to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

             World without end, Amen.

All:   The Lord has delivered his people,

       Alleluia!

Please read the canticle & its antiphon as indicated.

All: Blessed are you, great God of the universe.

Side 1: Blessed are you, great God of the universe.  You give us of your

very Self in Jesus.  In your abundant mercy we have been born

anew to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the

dead.  In this hope we rejoice even in the midst of trials, trials

that test the metal of our faith, more precious than gold refined in

the fire, a faith that will resound with gratitude & praise when with

all creation we see Christ face to face.

All: Blessed are you, great God of the universe.

Side 2: Without having seen you, we love you, we believe in you & rejoice

in unutterable joy.  Your power guards us, your compassion saves

us, your glory fills us; you promise an inheritance that nothing can

destroy.  Blessed are you, great God of the universe.

All: Blessed are you, great God of the universe.

Reading: John 20. 19-21 which will be followed by a short pause for personal reflection.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came & stood among them & said, ‘Peace be with you’.  After he said that, he showed them his hands & side.  The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.  Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you.  As the father has sent me, so I am sending you’.

We sing the Easter Acclamation.

All:   This is the day, this is the day, this is the day which

was made by the Lord.

Let us rejoice, rejoice & be glad, rejoice & be glad.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

We say the Magnificat antiphon & then sing the canticle.

All: On the evening of that Sunday, when the disciples were

gathered behind locked doors, Jesus came & stood

among them.  He said to them, ‘Peace be with you, alleluia!

Side 1:         My being proclaims your greatness,

And my spirit finds joy in you, God my Saviour;

Side 2:     For you have looked upon me, your servant, in my lowliness:

All ages to come shall call me blessed.

Side 1:         God, you who are mighty, have done great things for me:

Holy is your name.

Side 2:     Your mercy is from age to age

Towards those who fear you.

Side 1:         You have shown might with your arm,

And confused the proud in their inmost thoughts.

Side 2:     You have deposed the mighty from their thrones,

And raised the lowly to high places.

Side 1:         The hungry you have given every good thing,

While the rich you have sent away empty.

Side 2:     You have upheld Israel, your servant,

Ever mindful of your mercy-

Side 1:         Even as you promised our ancestors,

Promised Abraham, Sarah, and their descendants for ever.

All:          Give praise to the Father Almighty,

To his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,

To the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,

Both now and for ever, Amen.

All: On the evening of that Sunday, when the disciples were

gathered behind locked doors, Jesus came & stood
