Pray With Us

Leader:  In this week of the coming of the spirit, we continue to ask the spirit to lead us through life’s paths.

All:      Come Spirit of God.

Leader:   May the spirit feel at home within us & help us to use God’s gifts wisely.

All:      Come Spirit of God.

Leader:   May your spirit be amongst us whenever we meet here to pray.

All:      Stay with us, Spirit of God.

For our hymn tonight we can join in ‘Faith, Hope & Love’ – (Eternal Light Tr 14.)

Refrain: Faith, hope & love, let these remain among you,

Faith, hope & love, the greatest of these is love.

After supper was ended, Jesus rose from the table

And poured water into a bowl, washed the feet of his disciples,

And wiped them with a towel.

Refrain.

Then said Peter to Jesus, ‘Why is it that you wash my feet?’

He said, ‘You do not know what it is that I am doing,

But later you will understand’.

Refrain.

If I your Lord & your Teacher have made the choice to wash your feet,

You should wash each other’s feet.  I have set you an example

For you to do what I have done.

Refrain.

Please say the psalm & its antiphon as indicated.

All:   In holy splendour I begot you before the dawn.

Side 1:   God’s revelation to the anointed one, ‘Sit at my side, till I put injustice

              beneath your feet’.  God will send from Zion your sceptre of power:

              rule in the midst of your foes.

Side 2: Your people will give themselves freely on the day you lead your

          host upon the holy mountains. From the womb of the morning your

          youth will come like dew.

Side 1:    God has sworn an oath that will not be changed, ‘You are a priest for

              ever, after the order of Melchizedek’.  The anointed standing at your

              hand will shatter rulers on the day of wrath.

Side 2: Drinking from your streams by the wayside shall the chosen one be

         refreshed.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was

     in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

All:    In holy splendour I begot you before the dawn.

Please sing the second psalm as indicated.

Cantors: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice,

              For they shall have their fill.

Cantors:       Happy the one who fears the Lord,

                   Who greatly delights in his commands.

All:          His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth;

              The upright generation shall be blessed.

Cantors:       An evil report he shall not fear;

                   His heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.

All:          His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear

              Till he looks down on his foes.

Cantors:       Lavishly he gives to the poor;

                   His generosity shall endure forever;

All:          He shall be exalted in glory,

              Happy the one who fears the Lord.

All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

       And to the Holy Spirit;

       As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

       World without end, Amen.

All:          Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice,

For they shall have their fill.

Reading:  Pope Francis on Service.

Jesus wants us to touch human misery, to touch his flesh in the flesh of those who suffer in body or spirit. Touch, in order to let ourselves be touched by God. Understanding God’s mercy and shaping one’s life to conform to Christ and his compassion, lead to doing what is good in the world. Passion and compassion are gifts from the Holy Spirit that give energy and meaning to the mission of caring.  Take inspiration from the good Samaritan, who, although he was a stranger, was attentive and let himself be moved by the suffering that he saw. Concern for another’s life under threat brings the best out of his humanity.

Leader:   Let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

All:      Let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Leader: And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of the children of God.

All:     Through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Leader: Glory be to the Father & to the Son & to the Holy Spirit.

All:      Let us have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

We stand to sing the Magnificat & its antiphon as indicated.

Cantors:  Father, I pray for them, because they are yours and I consecrate myself for them,

              So that they may also be consecrated in the Truth.

Side 1:         My being proclaims your greatness,

 And my spirit finds joy in you, God my Saviour;

Side 2:     For you have looked upon me, your servant, in my lowliness:

       All ages to come shall call me blessed.

Side 1:         God, you who are mighty, have done great things for me:

                    Holy is your name.

Side 2:      Your mercy is from age to age

              Towards those who fear you.

Side 1:          You have shown might with your arm,

                    And confused the proud in their inmost thoughts.

Side 2:      You have deposed the mighty from their thrones,

              And raised the lowly to high places.

Side 1:          The hungry you have given every good thing,

                    While the rich you have sent away empty.

Side 2:      You have upheld Israel, your servant,

               Ever mindful of your mercy-

Side 1:           Even as you promised our ancestors,

                     Promised Abraham, Sarah, and their descendants for ever.

All:          Give praise to the Father Almighty,

              To his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

              To the Spirit who dwells in our hearts,

              Both now and for ever, Amen.

All:     Father, I pray for them, because they are yours and I consecrate myself for them,

        So that they may also be consecrated in the Truth.

May your longing be fulfilled as in heaven, so on earth.

Give us today the bread of tomorrow, & cancel our debts as we have already forgiven our debtors.

Do not draw us in to sinful enticement, but set us free from the grip of evil;
