Pray With Us

Leader: God has created me to do him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another.

All:        We bring that service to you in our prayer.

Leader: To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.

All:        We ask to always seek life.

Leader: Dear Lord…shine through us, and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence.

Let us thus praise you in the way You love best, by shining on those around us.

All:       Amen.

Please join in the hymn.

Refrain. A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you,

that you love one another as I have loved you.

By this shall people know you are my disciples, if you have love one for another

– by this shall people know you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. (Refrain).

You are my friends if you do what I command you. Without my help you can do nothing.

You are my friends if you do what I command you. Without my help you can do nothing. (Refrain).

I am the true vine, my Father is the gardener, abide in me: I will be with you.

I am the true vine, my Father is the gardener, abide in me: I will be with you. (Refrain).

True love is patient, not arrogant, nor boastful; love bears all things, love is eternal.

True love is patient, not arrogant, nor boastful; love bears all things, love is eternal. (Refrain).

Please sing the antiphon & psalm as indicated.

Cantors:  I have become a minister of the Gospel

According to the bountiful gift of God, alleluia!

Side 1:     Dear God, who are the honoured guests in your tent?

Who may dwell in your presence upon your holy mountain?

Side 2:    Who may commune with those who are your heart’s desire,

Lovingly embraced in the union of friends.

Side 1:    Those who lead incorrupt lives, & do the thing that is right,

Who speak the truth from their hearts & have not slandered with their tongues.

Side 2:   Those who have not betrayed their friends,

Or rained down abuse on their neighbours,

Side 1:    In whose eyes the shifty have no honour,

But hold in high esteem those who fear God.

Side 2:   Those who give their word to their neighbour,

And do not go back on their promise,

Side 1:   Who have not grown wealthy at the expense of the poor,

Or grown sleek with flattery or bribes.

Side 2:  Who depend on the mercy of God,

And live the highest law that is love.

Side 1:   Those who are steadfast & kind, who are resilient & patient & humble,

Who know the cost of a morsel of justice, a glimpse of compassion in savage times.

Side 2:  Their roots are deep in the being of God,

Their arms are spread wide in welcome embrace.

Side 1:   They are faithful, joyful & blessed,

God’s sisters & brothers & friends.

All:        Glory be to the Father and to the Son,

              And to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,

              World without end, Amen.

All:        I have become a minister of the Gospel

According to the bountiful gift of God, alleluia!

The canticle & its antiphon will be read as indicated.

All:         The saints will sing a new song before the throne of God & of the Lamb; their voices will fill the whole world.

Reader:  I saw in my mind’s eye a vision: a new realm, a new order, a new earth.

All:         For the old had decayed & passed away.  Even the seas of chaos had been calmed.

Reader:  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming out of the clouds of God’s presence,

All:         Prepared as a bride & bridegroom are adorned as gifts to each other.

Reader:  And I heard the voice of the One who reigns:

All:         Behold, I come to dwell among you, my people, & you will live in my presence.

Reader:  I will wipe away every tear from your eyes, & death will be no more, neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, anymore.

All:        The former things have passed away: Behold, I make all things new!

All:        The saints will sing a new song before the throne of God & of the Lamb; their voices will fill the whole world.

Reading.  John Henry Newman.

There are wounds of the spirit which never close and are intended in God’s mercy to bring us nearer to him, and to prevent us leaving him by their very perpetuity. Such wounds then may almost be taken as a pledge, or at least as a ground for a humble trust, that God will give perseverance to the end. This is how I comfort myself in my own great losses.

After a short pause, please enjoy Margaret Rizza’s Magnificat mantra.

Magnificat, anima mea Dominum

Intercessions: following some moments of quiet reflection on the following quotation from Newman, please make any intercessions.

‘I sought to hear the voice of God and climbed the topmost steeple, but God declared: “Go down again – I dwell among the people.’

After the last of these we pray for the dead:

Reader:     We pray for people who have died today & for those who will die tonight.  We also remember in prayer people whose anniversaries of death occur tomorrow & especially:

Leader begins the Our Father……………

Leader: God, who gave your spirit of truth & of love in full measure to John Henry Newman as a pastor of your people, grant that we who are celebrating his feast may be supported by his prayer & inspired by his writings.  We pray in Jesus’ name.

All:     Amen.

We end with Newman’s own words of blessing.

All: May God support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done! Then in God’s mercy may we be given a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.
