Foundation Day Talk (Dr Cormac Begadon) – Friday 9th October at 2pm

THE COMMUNITY INVITE YOU TO JOIN THEM
FOR THEIR FOUNDATION DAY TALK
Between Faith and Fortune:
The Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre,
Atlantic World and the Paradox of Religious Benefaction in the 18th century
– Dr Cormac Begadon
FRIDAY, 9TH OCTOBER AT 2PM
74, HOWE CLOSE, COLCHESTER CO4 3XD
This talk explores the Canonesses and their connections to the wider Atlantic world, examining the complex interplay between religious devotion, wealth, and charitable giving. It considers the less seen histories that emerge from these connections, including the ways in which wealth and benefaction were linked to the slave trade. It traces these Atlantic connections through the women who joined the Community and the donors whose gifts sustained it, revealing how the Canonesses were connected to wider narratives of migration, family, wealth, and slavery.
Cormac Begadon is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Theology at Durham University. A historian of Catholicism, his PhD explored the Church in the archdiocese of Dublin in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while his more recent research has focussed on Catholic interactions with the Enlightenment and the impact of the French Revolution on British and Irish religious orders, in particular the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. He coordinates an international research network – ISHWRA – which examines the history of Catholic nuns and sisters. His current project, ‘Religious History and Catholic Archives’ received a Leverhulme Trust/British Academy award.
